Zonta Club Ibadan 1 celebrated an iconic woman, Amelia Earhart. The Amelia Earhart Fellowship Awards began in 1938. Amelia Earhart was a Zontian from 1928 to 1937. She was a member of Zonta when she disappeared in 1937 while attempting to circumnavigate the globe. That is why, in Zonta, we celebrate the trailblazer, adventurer, advocate, public figure, and author every year. Today, 20 January 2025, the award aimed to promote excellence by organizing a school debate between four secondary schools in Ibadan: St. Louis Secondary School, All Saints Secondary School, Urban Day Secondary School, and Tobi International School. Three students emerged as winners. Earhart gained fame in 1928 when she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean as a passenger. She later became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic in 1932, which earned her the United States Distinguished Flying Cross, making her the first woman to receive this honor. Throughout her career, she set numerous records, including altitude and speed records for female pilots.
